Car Battery Corrosion

Car Battery performs the most important role in the smooth and trouble-free running of a car. So it requires utmost care and maintenance. There are several reasons that affect Car Battery life and smooth running, one of the main reasons is Corrosion

What is Car Battery Corrosion

The Battery is working based on the chemical reaction inside. Corrosion on the Car Battery due to a chemical reaction inside Car battery, which produces gas from acid. That can escape from the plastic container due to some reasons. This is the main cause of the corrosion which we saw around the Car Battery Terminal. Corrosion looks like a crispy substance on the terminal ports. Corrosion causes connection loss between Car and Car Battery. Mostly Corrosion appears when we keep the Car battery idle and at the end of the Battery life. We can find corrosion on the Battery terminal and it continues to cable connections. Corrosion will increase accordingly when keeping the Car Battery idle. By cleaning as well as preventing corrosion timely from Car batteries we decrease Car Battery failure and increase trouble-free service and life.

Here are some reasons for Car Battery Corrosion. This will help us to prevent the Battery from it.

Overcharging

Overcharging will Increase chemical reaction inside the Car Battery due to this Acid inside will push out of the vent plugs and another possible area that leads to Corrosion.

Copper Clamps

Copper is corrosion-friendly metal. Copper is using to make clamps that connect the wires to the Car Battery. When current passes through copper it produces copper sulfate produces corrosion.

Overfill Car Battery

Lead Acid Batteries are filled with electrolytes (Acid + Distilled Water). If we fill alkaline water too much into the Car Battery it will spill out of vent plugs to the top of the Car Battery get in touch with copper clamps and corrode Battery Terminals. So don’t fill too much water, a maximum-minimum indication is there in the Car Battery Container follow that.

Leakage

As we told Car Battery is filled with electrolytes. If Battery is not fitted correctly in the cradle or does not maintain timely electrolytes will start leaking that accumulate on the top of the Battery and leads to corrosion.

Car Battery Age

If your Car Battery is more than 4 years old, you will see corrosion on Battery. Don’t wait for a breakdown, change the Car Battery immediately

Cleaning Car Battery Corrosion

Here are some tips to clean your Car Battery Corrosion. Clean it by self or you can approach any Car Battery Shop or Dealer.

Procedures for cleaning Corrosion

You should remove all the connections to the Car Battery first, also use all safety types of equipment like Eyeglass and gloves. Car Battery contains Acid which will harm your body. While don’t forget to arrange all the tools for the work. When using tools at the time of dismantling cables from the Battery be careful about spark which can occur by contact between negative and positive terminals of the Car Battery with the metal tools.

  • First Disconnect the Negative cable then Positive Cable.
  • Place cable wrench on the cable end nut then turn it counterclockwise
  • Most of the Car Batteries are top post Batteries, for that loosen the nut fully till it free
  • Some Batteries are sided post Batteries. Need to loosen till it removes.
            Cleaning the Car Battery Corrosion
  • Make a solution with Baking Soda and Water
  • Use Soft Wire Brush to Clean the Battery Terminals

Clean both terminals with Baking soda + water solution using a wire brush. The chemical reaction between acidic corrosion Baking soda + water solution will help you to remove corrosion on the Car Battery.

Apply Petroleum Jelly

After cleaning the corrosion wash both the terminals and cable clamps with water. Then dry it with cloth or air. Apply petroleum jelly on both terminals and cable clamps. When electricity passes petroleum jelly will prevent the Car Battery from corrosion.

You can also use Battery Cleaning materials available in the market to clean the corrosion

  1. Battery Terminal Brush
  2. Battery Cleaner Spray
  3. Water
  4. Corrosion protective Spray

Disconnect the Bothe Cables first, Apply Battery Cleaner spray on both Terminals as well as Cable clamps. The spray will neutralize the Acid Corrosion on the Battery.

After spray waits for some time. You can see the color of the spray change. Apply the Cleaner Spray again now you can see the color of the spray doesn’t change it means Acid corrosion is neutralized.

Clean both the terminals and cable clamps with water and dry it

Then apply Corrosion protective Spray

Reconnecting Car Battery Connections.

Reconnect the Positive Cable first using Cable wrench then Negative Cable.
